Horses of the Steppe
Horses of the Steppe
Originally painted to accompany our chronicle of the Mongolian Steppe, this illustration is a tribute to the magnificent horses that define that vast landscape. These sturdy, spirited animals were the inspiration for one of the world's most beautiful instruments: the Morin Khuur, or "Horse-head Fiddle."
According to legend, the first Morin Khuur was crafted by a grieving shepherd from the remains of his beloved flying horse, so that its voice would never truly be silent. Rendered in raw, earthy watercolor tones, this print captures the rugged beauty and enduring spirit that connect the music, the land, and the horse.
